Pricing guide for tradespeople

The same figures that protect customers from rip-offs help honest tradespeople quote with confidence. Use this guide with the calculators above.

Price the job, not the hour

  • Walk the job before quoting. Measure, photograph, note access, parking, waste removal and anything unusual.
  • Quote one fixed price for the whole job, broken into labour, materials and extras. Customers trust a total they can hold you to.
  • State exactly what is included and excluded in writing. Most disputes come from assumptions, not bad work.

Build your rate from real numbers

  • Day rate = (annual salary you want + van, tools, insurance, tax, holiday and sick days) ÷ billable days. Most sole traders bill only 180–210 days a year.
  • Add 10–20% contingency on jobs with hidden risk (old plumbing, unknown wiring, rotten timber).
  • Materials: charge trade price plus a handling margin of 10–15%, or let the customer buy from a list you specify.

Use these calculators as a benchmark

  • Each calculator shows realistic hours, crew size and a fair price range for a typical UK job. Adjust for your region — London and the South East run 20–40% higher.
  • If your quote is far above the fair range, be ready to explain why: difficult access, premium materials, out-of-hours work.
  • If a competitor is far below it, expect corners to be cut — say so politely and show what your price includes.

Protect yourself and the customer

  • Take a deposit of 10–20% (never more than a third) and stage payments on jobs longer than a week.
  • Send a written quote with start date, duration, payment schedule and what happens if hidden problems appear.
  • Keep photos before, during and after. They settle almost every disagreement.
