- Is the 4% rule still safe?
- The Trinity Study (updated 2023 by Wade Pfau) supports 3.5–4.0% for a 30-year retirement with a 60/40 portfolio. Longer retirements (40+ years, early retirees) should use 3.0–3.5%.
- Should I use nominal or real return?
- Use real return (net of inflation) — this calculator assumes you enter today's-dollars income and get today's-dollars target. A 7% nominal / 3% inflation portfolio = 4% real. We suggest 5% real as a moderate assumption.
- What about Social Security / State Pension?
- Subtract expected government pension income from your desired retirement income before running this calc. US SS averages $22k/year; UK State Pension £11.5k; German Rente varies with contributions.
- What does the Retirement Nest Egg & Savings Gap Calculator do?
- How big does your retirement portfolio need to be, and are you on track? Uses the 4% safe withdrawal rate and adjusts for inflation. How-to: enter your current age, retirement age, desired retirement income (in today's money), current retirement savings and monthly contribution. Nest egg target = annual income ÷ 4% (25× rule, from the Trinity Study). We project current savings + contributions forward at your expected return and show the gap. Adjust for inflation by using real return (nominal − inflation).
